Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc, Waltham, Mass has introduced Thermo Scientific KingFisher Flex magnetic particle processor, which is based on the KingFisher 96 and offers increased flexibility and throughput with the incorporation of magnetic heads for 96- and 24-well plates.

The new 24-magnet head enables the high-speed processing of samples from 200 to 5,000 µL in 24-well deep-well plates, providing 5x the yield, with reproducibility.

In combination with 20 to 1,000 µL volume range for 96-well plate processing, the processor offers automated magnetic particle processing for DNA/RNA, protein, or cell purification from varied sources. The larger combined volume range (20 – 5000 µL) makes it suitable for clinical and biomedical researchers requiring larger volumes of starting material such as whole blood, and for industrial and process laboratories for quality control.

The new control panel, color display, and on-board memory provide access to all settings and more than 100 protocols. The robot-compatible unit integrates with bench top automation systems. An inbuilt heating block allows samples to be heated from 4˚C above ambient to 96˚C, for purifications where higher temperatures are required.

Purification of all samples is accomplished in 10 to 40 minutes per run. The BindIt PC interface software lets users set access control levels and offers clear reporting and advanced protocol management. The features are suitable for biotech, research, and quality control labs seeking to automate sample purification, from single or multiple sources.
