In June, acetyl fentanyl, a synthetic opioid 40 times more potent than heroin, caused 14 overdose deaths in Rhode Island. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention subsequently issued a health alert against the drug, advising toxicology laboratories to test for its presence by GC/MS for any overdose patients whose ELISA screens showed positive for fentanyl.

Now Cerilliant has introduced a certified reference material of acetyl fentanyl in methanol at a concentration of 1.0 mg/mL. It can be used as a Snap-N-Spike starting material to prepare calibrators and controls in fentanyl testing methods and for other forensic, clinical toxicology, or prescription monitoring applications by GC/MS or LC/MS. A 13C6–labeled internal standard at a concentration of 100 ?g/mL in methanol is also available through Cerilliant to quantify acetyl fentanyl levels using MS methods.

“Both illicit and licit drugs are emerging at such a rapid pace that it is challenging for laboratories to develop and revise new methods,” said Derrell Johnson, Cerilliant’s New Product Development Manager. “We are continually monitoring emerging drugs of abuse like acetyl fentanyl to meet the demanding needs of the analytical testing community.”
