Ava, Zurich, has added a new feature to its fertility-tracking Ava bracelet, helping provide users with key insights into whether they have ovulated during a monthly cycle.

Ava will automatically assess user data to detect a biphasic shift in physiological parameters during a woman’s cycle. In a biphasic pattern, some physiological parameters, including skin temperature and pulse rate, increase in response to the increase in progesterone after ovulation. Most women with ovulatory cycles exhibit a biphasic parameter pattern on their charts, and a key factor in getting pregnant is for ovulation to occur. However, up to 12% of women actually have anovulatory cycles, or cycles without an ovulation.

“Besides wanting to know when the fertile window is, our Ava users typically want to know if they have ovulated at all, and so we believe this new feature meets a critical demand,” says Lea von Bidder, chief executive and cofounder of Ava.

According to von Bidder, Ava is the only available device that can detect a biphasic pattern based not on temperature alone, but also on other parameters such as pulse rate. “This is a critical difference, as in some cases the shift in parameters can’t be seen in temperature, but Ava’s algorithm may still recognize it in other parameters related to progesterone.”
