Gen-Probe Inc, San Diego, unveiled Progensa PCA3, a new urine test that offers additional information to aid in the diagnosis of prostate cancer (PCa), which is the second most commonly diagnosed malignancy and a leading cause of cancer death in men across the globe. Current practices for detecting PCa utilize PSA and DRE as indications for biopsy.
PCA3 is a prostate-specific gene that is over expressed (60-100 times) in prostate tumors. The test is highly specific and uses Transcription Mediated Amplification (TMA) to quantify the PCA3 mRNA in a patient urine sample. The resulting output is a PCA3 score that can be used in conjunction with other patient history to predict biopsy outcomes.
Progensa(TM) PCA3 is CE-marked and currently available in the UK, The Netherlands, Germany, France and Belgium.
