The c-Kit proto-oncogene encodes a 145–165 kDa transmembrane receptor (CD117) with tyrosine kinase activity that is structurally related to the platelet-derived growth factor. The c-Kit antibody has been widely used for identification and diagnosis of gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST). It can also be used with the antibody panel including CD34, S-100, desmin, and smooth-muscle actin to differentiate between GISTs, true smooth-muscle tumors, and neural tumors.
    The monoclonal c-Kit antibody has been characterized for immunohistostaining of frozen and formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue sections.
