The endotoxin activity assay (EAA) is used to aid in the risk assessment of patients in the ICU for developing severe sepsis, an infection that occurs when the body is overwhelmed by the inflammatory response, causing organs to fail. The EAA test is a rapid indicator of endotoxin that allows physicians to stratify patients according to those who are at risk of severe sepsis and those who require antisepsis and/or anti-infection therapy. This process permits rational and cost-efficient use of antibiotics and newly emerging antisepsis therapies.
