Elenitoba-Johnson Receives USCAP Young Investigator Award
The United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology (USCAP) awarded the Ramzi Cotran Young Investigator Award for 2006 to Kojo Elenitoba-Johnson, MD, associate professor of pathology at the University of Utah School of Medicine and director of molecular hematopathology at ARUP Laboratories. This prestigious award, restricted to individuals under the age of 45, was established to recognize a member of USCAP who has contributed significantly to the diagnosis and understanding of human disease. The award is named after Ramzi Cotran, MD, past president of USCAP, mentor to many in USCAP, and the individual who envisioned this award.

In the past 10 years, Elenitoba-Johnson has emerged as one of the leaders in the field of translational research involving molecular and systems biologic approaches for analysis of malignant lymphoma.

 Atherotech Names Mullen CFO
Atherotech Inc has appointed Michael V. Mullen CFO. Mullen will spearhead financing, strategic planning, and interaction with the financial community as the company continues to focus on expanding its business-to-business diagnostic lab sales and increasing physician adoption of the Vertical Auto Profile (VAP®) Cholesterol Test.

Mullen says he is pleased to rejoin Atherotech at a time when the company has solidified its VAP Test as the new standard of care in cholesterol risk assessment and a vital tool in the diagnosis and therapeutic management of patients at risk for heart disease. “This is an exciting time for Atherotech, with the VAP Test gaining momentum in the clinical setting and among the leading national and regional diagnostic laboratories,” he says. “I look forward to working with the company to broaden all of our business prospects in 2006 and beyond.”

ASCP Awards Scholarships
The American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) has awarded 47 $1,000 scholarships and four $500 phlebotomy scholarships to top medical laboratory students as part of the association’s 2005/2006 student scholarship program. In addition, ASCP partnered with Roche Diagnostics and Dade Behring to give away 44 additional scholarships. A total of $144,000 in scholarships was awarded this year.

“The American Society for Clinical Pathology would like to thank the ASCP members who opted to donate to the scholarship fund on their annual ASCP membership-renewal forms,” says ASCP President Fred H. Rodriguez, Jr, MD, FASCP. “Their generosity helps make the program a great success.”

ASCP awards the scholarships annually to students in their final clinical year of study to become certified medical technologists, medical laboratory technicians, cytotechnologists, and histotechnologists/histologic technicians. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic achievement, professional goals, and leadership abilities.

The student scholarship program was started in 1992 to encourage the best and brightest students to pursue careers in the laboratory. The program also aims to relieve financial burdens, which can be a roadblock for many talented students.
