Sure-Vue Color Staph ID Kit

Rapid test

Biokit USA Inc, Lexington, Mass, offers the Sure-Vue® Color Staph ID kit, a rapid test that may help curb the spread of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). The kit is a color-enhanced latex slide test for the detection of clumping factor and protein A. It features Control Latex for the identification of noninterpretable results, positive and negative QC controls, and MRSA sensitivity of 100%; and provides results in 10 to 30 seconds. The product may be purchased through Fisher HealthCare in 150- and 300-test-size kits.

Clearview COMPLETE HIV 1/2

Self-contained format

The updated Clearview® COMPLETE HIV 1/2 offered by Inverness Medical, Waltham, Mass, provides a three-in-one self-contained barrel format that handles collection, processing, and analysis of 2.5 µL of blood, serum, or plasma for the detection of HIV-1 and HIV-2 antibodies. A lancet and adhesive bandage are supplied with each test device for convenience in POC test environments or for the outreach setting. The test is 99.7% sensitive and 99.9% specific, and includes a 24-month shelf life from date of manufacture. It received a CLIA waiver in November 2007.

SeroSpin Centrifuge

Serology instrument

The SeroSpin® centrifuges from Helmer, Noblesville, Ind, offer a 12-place rotor that is useful for serological applications. The SeroSpin-FA includes a 12-place fixed-angle rotor, and can be used for cross matching and blood typing. The fixed-angle rotor stands alone, and retainers hold tubes in place so all tubes can be decanted at once. The package can be used for manual cell washing. The SeroSpin-SO includes a 12-place swing-out rotor, and is also used for cross matching and blood typing. The swing-out rotor allows users to drop-in and remove multiple tubes at once. The units accommodate 10- x 75-mm and 12- x 75-mm tubes. Run time is programmable in seconds and minutes. RPM and RCF are adjustable in increments of 10, and ramp-up/ramp-down time is adjustable in levels 1 to 9. The centrifuge includes a brushless drive motor with a stainless steel chamber and metal housing. Rotor recognition and speed control provide additional controls. Safety features include lid lock and hold, emergency lid release, motor-overheat protection, and imbalance detection.

Captia Syphilis-IgM Capture

Trinity Biotech, Berkeley Heights, NJ, introduces the Captia™ Syphilis-IgM Capture kit, the newest member of the Captia ELISA family of infectious disease tests. The FDA-cleared test measures IgM to T. pallidum without interference from IgG. The test is objective, quantitative, and can be fully automated. It can be used to help diagnose congenital syphilis, to help differentiate a past infection from a current or recent infection, and to detect the early, predominantly IgM antibody response associated with primary syphilis. Its full-spectrum menu of syphilis-testing offerings also includes Syphilis IgG and polyvalent Syphilis IgG and IgM.

Clearview HIV 1/2 STAT-PAK

Cassette-based format

The updated Clearview® HIV 1/2 STAT-PAK® from Inverness Medical, Waltham, Mass, is a cassette-based format that uses a 5-µL sample for the detection of HIV 1 and HIV 2 antibodies. Sample buffer and 5-µL collection loops are provided with each kit. The simple cassette-based format, small sample size, and shelf life make it useful for most test environments. The test is 99.7% sensitive and 99.9% specific, and provides 24-month shelf life from date of manufacture. Clearview HIV controls are sold separately and include a 24-month shelf life from date of manufacture. The product is CLIA waived.
